1. What is VBP+<\/h3>\n

The original VBP program was created in 2004 by the Canadian Cattle Association<\/strong><\/a>. At that time, it had requirements on food safety<\/strong><\/a>, including animal health<\/strong><\/a> management, pesticide and manure management<\/strong><\/a>, and the shipment of animals<\/strong><\/a>. In 2016, the \u201cPlus\u201d was added to reflect three additional components in VBP+<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n

  1. Biosecurity<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. Environmental stewardship<\/a><\/li>\n
  3. Animal care<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    One section in the specifications also deals with producers\u2019 social consciousness, employee training, and community involvement<\/strong><\/a>. It came as no surprise, then, that VBP+ was recognized by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef<\/strong><\/a> in 2018. Bear in mind that sustainability means more than just environmental stewardship; it encompasses people and community, animal health and welfare, food security, efficiency, and innovation. These aspects all serve the goal of economic viability for the cattle production sector and its businesses.<\/p>\n
